UFC 203 had arrived, which means the much anticipated debut of Phil “CM Punk” Brooks against Mickey Gall was finally here. Many, both wrestling and UFC fans alike, were ready to see if Punk could prove his haters wrong or simply flop in the octagon.
This fight had a big fight feel even though it was between a man who had a (2-0) record in UFC and a former WWE professional wrestler who had a (0-0) record and no prior MMA experience before joining the UFC.
The atmosphere in Cleveland, Ohio was already incredible but when CM Punk’s entrance music hit, the roof of the Quicken Loans arena became unglued. He came out to his old WWE entrance music “Cult of Personality” by Living Colour. The pop Punk received was off the charts, he was even smiling while he made his way to the cage. The real question was would he be smiling after this fight.
The time had come for Punk to show what he was made of and immediately he got a big reality check. Mere seconds into the fight he charged at Gall and he got taken down immediately. Gall started hammering his face and the side of his head and would not let Punk get any offense in. Punk tried to get out of this predicament, but eventually Gall was able to apply a rear naked choke and Punk had no choice but to tap out. The fight was over in less than 2:30 minutes.
Post fight Punk and Gall did show sportsmanship to each other. Punk was then interviewed. This is what he had to say.
“In life you go big, you go home. I just like to take challenges,” Punk said. “This was a hell of a mountain to try and climb. I didn’t get to the summit today but that doesn’t mean I’m going to give up. That doesn’t mean I’m going to stop.I will be back, believe it or not. This is the most fun I’ve ever had in my life.”
Punk did show a lot of heart in this fight. Transitioning from professional wrestler to UFC fighter is no easy feat. Punk might not have come out the victor in the fight, but did show he has a lot of guts.
Here is a picture of Punk after being defeated by Gall. Safe to say he took a brutal beating.
Do you think Punk will return to the octagon any time soon? Do you think he will win ever win a fight in the UFC?
