NXT opens with a video package recapping the feud between NXT Champion Shinsuke Nakamura and Samoa Joe the past few weeks and the brawl that erupted when Nakamura returned. Nakamura was scheduled to address the rivalry later.
The action beings with a first round match of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.
Rich Swann & No Way Jose Vs. Tony Nese & Drew Gulak
The Universe sees a lot from the cruiserweight division. They are also very familiar with Swann as he competed in the Cruiser Weight Classic and is a part of the cruiserweight division on RAW. Jose and Swann were previously announced as a team due to their similar personalities. Much like Swann, Nese and Gulak competed in the CWC as well this past summer. They mentioned in a short promo before the match that there’s no need for “second rate dance moves” and it’s all about “mental toughness and physical ability.”
Instantly, the crowd got behind Swann and Jose, mixing their chants together. Gulak and Swann begin the match and as Gulak is able to evade strikes until getting drop kicked and Swann tagging in Jose. Jose was able to momentarily avoid Nese as he danced his way out of harms way. Throughout the match the emphasis was drawn on the power Jose displayed. One of the most impressive and notably moves that night had to be the corkscrew delivered to Nese by Swann outside of the ring. Jose picks up the win for his team with a Full Nelson Slam and pinning Gulak. Swann and Jose advance to the next round, however, their next opponents will be the undefeated team of the Authors of Pain.
Results: No Way Jose & Rich Swann defeated Tony Nese & Drew Gulak via pin fall
After the match, they grab two mics and express their outlooks of the next round with some easy puns.
Do you think they can pull the unbelievable and defeat the Authors of Pain?
Next, we are given an update on the status of Hideo Itami. Itami has been announced to have suffered an injury that will prevent him from teaming with Kota Ibushi in the tag team classic. WWE promises to have more information about Itami’s condition in the days to come.
We transition into the previous actions of Bobby Roode abandoning his tag team classic partner, Tye Dillinger, during their first round match against Sanity. Earlier that day, Dillinger was asked about it to which Dillinger reveals that Regal has granted him a match between Roode at NXT TakeOver: Toronto on November 19th.
Who do you see coming out on top in this feud? Who will win at NXT TakeOver: Toronto?
Backstage, Austin Aries is questioned about his partner in the tag team classic. He doesn’t reveal his partner right then and there but goes on to say the tag team classic is not for everyone including his rival Itami himself, who he said is suffering a “sore neck” but stated doctors claimed that Itami just has “no spine,” a coward reference to Itami in facing him. He lastly mentions that only the greatest survive. He also didn’t fail to mention the nutritious power of potassium in a banana.
Were you upset that the feud between Aries and Itami was cut short due to Itami’s injury?
Bobby Roode Vs. Sean Maluta
Maluta is no stranger to the Universe. He was also featured in the CWC. Roode’s infamous theme seems to be more over than anything and anyone as the crowd strongly sings to the tune. Graves pointed that Roode’s new robe is worth the value of $30,000. Maluta was able to gain an upper hand for a few minutes as Roode was too busy basking in the “gloriousness” of himself but quickly gets back on track and dominates the rest of the match. Maluta surprisingly gets a two count from a roll-up pin, which Roode is not too happy about that the match quickly ends with a DDT to Maluta.
Results: Bobby Roode defeated Sean Maluta via pin fall
After the match, Roode claims that Dillinger complained and whined all over social media, Dillinger was the one to “beg him” to be his partner and that out of the goodness of his heart he accepted his offer. Roode also said that he tried to guide Dillinger to his level and was simply “eliminating the losers” of his glorious level. His speech was cut short as Dillinger runs out to the ring and attacks Roode and eventually sending him out and back up the ramp. A frustrated Roode said there is “no beef” but it is clear that there now is.
Whose side are you on – Dillinger or Roode? Is there really “no beef” between the two as Roode proclaimed?
More backstage segments as Liv Morgan speaks about her match last week with Billie Kay, which showed Peyton Royce’s involvement that allowed her friend to win. Morgan doesn’t get to say much as the Australian-sensational duo come out and sneak attack her all the way outside to the ramp.
Kay speaks to the crowd with an empty apology and saying that, “Liv was about to complain about getting beat up but she got beat up again.” Royce then added that they are putting the women of NXT on notice, including the NXT Women’s Champion Asuka. The two believe that the women’s division belongs to the Femme Fatal and the Venus Flytrap of NXT.
How strong do you think the team of Kay and Royce really is? Do they pose a legit threat to the NXT Women’s Champion? Will Morgan ever get her retribution?
First Round Match of The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic:
Tucker Knight & Otis Dozovic Vs. Austin Aries & Roderick Strong
It was revealed that Aries’ mystery partner was Roderick Strong. Strong was announced to have officially signed with NXT last week and was a top competitor at the wrestling promotion called Ring of Honor. He is no stranger to wrestling enthusiast all over the world as a decorated veteran and independent wrestler and also to the roster of both NXT, RAW and SmackDown! Live. Strong has notably competed against other current WWE Superstars such as Seth Rollins and Samoa Joe.
Aries and Strong seemed to have instant chemistry and the same great set of skills. Aries and Dozovic start the match with a test of strength. Aries breaks the test with a kick and as Otis goes into offense mode, Strong is tagged in. Strong sealed the win with a gut buster and running kick to Knight. These two were awesome to watch as a team. Their next opponents are TM61.
Results: Austin Aries & Roderick Strong defeated Tucker Knight & Otis Dozovic via pin fall
Do you think Aries and Strong can defeat their next opponents? What was your reaction to seeing Strong on NXT?
Two weeks ago The Revival beat the team of Andrade “Cien” Almas & Cedric Alexander but what transpired after the match between the latter team sparked controversy. Almas turned on his tag team partner, Alexander, after losing to the tag team champions in their first round match of the tag team classic. WWE Broadcaster Andrea DeMarco sat down with Almas to explain his actions. DeMarco served as a translator as Almas basically said he worked a lifetime for respect and that the hasn’t been shown any since he arrived at NXT. Also, he isn’t worrying about respect anymore but only himself.
Where do you see this new side of Almas going? Will it help him? What do you think Alexander’s response will be?
Nikki Cross with Sanity Vs. Danielle Kamella
The quartet of Sanity, consisting of Eric Young, Nikki Cross, Sawyer Fulton and Alexander Wolfe. The stable debuted in a first round match that consisted of Fulton and Wolfe, who defeated Dillinger and Roode in a first round match of the tag team classic. We’ve seen Kamella previously and on what she could do in the ring but everything she successfully planted on Cross only seemed to fuel Cross. Cross bit, clawed and slapped herself near the end of the match. The match was significantly short as Cross won with a swinging neck breaker. Cross wasn’t done yet. She continued to beat Kamella until the leader of the group, Young, tried to reason with her. However, that wasn’t going to stop her as she slapped Young’s face. Due to her vicious and “bad sportsmanship,” the referee decided to reverse his decision and announced Kamella as the new winner. Young seemed to be upset about the call but not Cross. Cross’ gimmick alone showed just how unstable and rabid the stable actually is. It was a bit refreshing to see a woman show a much more viciousness and not in a “crazy-in-love” gimmick.
Results: Danielle Kamella via Official’s reverse decision
What are your thoughts about Sanity?
A preview of another first round match in the tag team classic is announced as the team of Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano a.k.a. DIY go up against Hoho Lun & Tian Bing. Ibushi’s new partner, in place of Itami, is revealed to be Cruiser Weight Champion, TJ Perkins. The team will take on Lince Dorado & Mustafa Ali next week.
What are your predictions for these two first round matches next week?
Lastly, NXT Champion, Shinsuke Nakamura, came out to address the situation he and Samoa Joe are currently in. He stated that things with Joe are far from finished and that they will settle their differences at NXT TakeOver: Toronto. Nakamura said he’s ready for all the tricks, cheats and whatever Joe has up his sleeves because he will deliver a beating with no mercy.
Patrick Clark, whose attire almost resembles some sort of brooding vampire, abruptly interrupts Nakamura asking him to experience Patrick Clark in a match claiming that it would be a dream for Nakamura. Clark is quickly eliminated by the champion and Joe shows up at the entrance ramp. Nakamura delivers a Kinshasa to Clark for good measure and more importantly to send a message to Joe. The episode ends with the two competitors staring down menacingly at each other as the show fades to black.
What did you think about Clark’s bold move to come out and confront the champion? Can Joe recapture his title from the King of Strong Style?
Let us know what you thought about this week’s NXT!
