Over the summer, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) presented the Mae Young Classic, a 32 woman tournament that would determine who is the best female wrestler in the world. Out of the 32 women in this tournament there was one woman that had a lot of buzz coming into this competition, the Pirate Princess, Kairi Sane.
Kairi Sane, or better known as Kairi Hojo before she arrived to WWE, had a lot of hype coming into the Mae Young Classic. Sane, according to many wrestling news sites, was one of the best female wrestlers in the world. Particularly she was famous for having the best elbow drop in the business.
Some would argue, including me, that she has an elbow drop that might even surpass “Macho Man” Randy Savage. Where better for Sane to debut than in a tournament that features some of the best women wrestlers in the world.
After a long and grueling tournament, it was the Pirate Princess who stood tall after she defeated Shayna Baszler in the finals. Kairi Sane is your inaugural Mae Young Classic winner. ESPN later broke the news that Sane would be challenging for the vacated NXT Women’s Championship at NXT Takeover Houston.
So what does this mean for Sane? Will she be booked to win the title in November? Whatever happens, I can tell you that the NXT Women’s Division will be in good hands, and I will give you three reasons why everything will be alright.
The first reason why Sane will lead the NXT Women’s Division to the next level in the future is because she is one of the best workers in the company.
Kairi Sane started wrestling not too long ago. In fact, it was just 2011 when she became a pro and started wrestling at the Stardom promotion. Over those five years, she made a name for herself in many promotions. Sane can work with absolutely anyone and can adapt to any style.
The first time I was introduced to Sane was when she had an appearance on Lucha Underground where she battled Pentagon Dark. For those who don’t know, that is a male wrestler. She can wrestle men and look amazing at the same time.
Not many female wrestlers in the world can say that. If you need more proof that Sane is one of the best in the world, just look at her matches with Io Shirai in the Stardom Promotion.
Those according to not just me, but the Wrestling Observer even said the matches Sane and Shirai had are some of the best women’s matches in recent memory. Need more proof? Just look at the matches Sane had in the Mae Young Classic.
In each match, she fought a woman with very different styles and always fought at a height and weight disadvantage as well.
One match in particular that shows how great Sane can make anyone look is the match she had with Bianca Belair. Belair who only has but one year of wrestling was made to look so good when she wrestled Sane. Here is clip from their match.
The second reason why Kairi Sane will lead the NXT Women’s Division into the future is because her character is unique.
The Pirate Princess gimmick according to Sane came from her love of yachting. She was a serious competitor in the sport, that she even got good enough to compete in the World Championships.
When she decided to pursue wrestling, she wanted a part of herself to show the fans and the Pirate Princess character was born. In WWE, there really hasn’t been a successful pirate character. There have been some attempts of it, but it hasn’t worked out. Sane however, with this character captivated everyone. If you watch her entrance in Stardom or even in the Mae Young Classic, you just get this feeling that she is a star and that you are about to see something incredible.
The final reason why Kairi Sane will keep the momentum of the NXT Women’s Division going is because she is genuinely loved by everyone in the WWE Universe.
The first time we saw Sane interviewed on WWE television, she came off so charming. In fact, she even politely asked the viewers of the Mae Young Classic to “please cheer for me.” If that doesn’t make you like her then hopefully her wrestling will turn you into a fan.
Sane is a star. Every time she came out for her matches, she got a huge ovation at Full Sail University in front of the hardcore fans. No disrespect to the Full Sail crowd, but anyone who is an Indy darling can get a pop there.
The place I realized Sane would be a star was during the Finals of the Mae Young Classic in Las Vegas. The finals took place in front of a crowd of “Casual Fans,” right after Smackdown Live ended. Sane had an uphill battle ahead of her, and I’m not just talking about Shayna Baszler. Sane had to find a way to get this crowd into the match, and that is difficult for most wrestlers to do, especially if they don’t know who you are.
Sane was up to the challenge, and by the end of the match, everybody was cheering her after her victory. She got “casuals” to cheer her. That is very difficult nowadays. That is when I knew that she is going to be a mega star.
Kairi Sane’s future looks incredibly bright. The tournament has come an passed and now it’s time for her to make her mark in NXT. Her voyage to the top of the NXT Women’s Division begins now. Whether she wins the title on November 18th or doesn’t, we can safely say that the Pirate Princess has elbow dropped straight into the hearts of the WWE Universe.
Do you think Kairi Sane’s presence in the NXT Women’s Division will take it to the next level? Let us know.
